Ideas crisis is not only in my head

Posted in Uncategorized by churchofyourheart on March 19, 2009

Cool dudes’ been telling us: implement what you need and what you like yourself. This works, unless you have nothing that you need and nothing that you like. It feels like it’s an ideas crisis and it’s not only in my head: nobody for the last year hasn’t done anything I would personally pay for (except GitHub – I’m on free account, but I would pay, if I needed). This feeling was described perfectly by this comment.

Could it be that the innovation spirit has shifted somewhere else? Could it be that web simply does not need as much innovation and does not have any more potential to feed all those programmers hoping to get their millions?

It’s just that I’ve been thinking for the last 2 months (and I mean thinking all the time using different approaches: taking a walk, talking to people, just sitting and concentrating, writing down the thoughts, trying out a few ideas with the actual code) and nothing really seemed to be at least promising. And no one else from “webdev startupping” I talked to or heard of sounded promising either. What’s that?

Being there

Posted in Uncategorized by churchofyourheart on February 27, 2009

I think at some point in life you decide that relationship is irrelevant and that no matter where it goes and how it goes, you’ll always be there for a person. That no matter what you say to each other and who’s actually smarter, she will never stop being part of your life. That no matter who she fucks and whom you fuck, you’re the family (pretty good phrase here). When you accept this, it becomes so easy not to be an ass and stop doing stupid things.

And it’s not even the question, if she’s the one or if she’s not. It’s just the question of acceptance of your life up to the moment. Acceptance is better than rage or denying, because it leads somewhere. It teaches you to fix your mistakes, not to avoid them. And, finally, it gives you a sense of something constant that no one else can take from you.

The “background” argument

Posted in Uncategorized by churchofyourheart on February 21, 2009

Sometimes when you’re arguing about something, you would hear “you say this because you’re 20 years old” or “you wouldn’t say this unless you were divorced”. While these arguments might be true, most of the times when they’re used it’s actually just a way to avoid providing a reasonable argument.

The thing is that it’s always something. People who disagree, but don’t have reasonable arguments will always find something in your background that could explain your mistaken point of view. Don’t believe in endless love? Well, that’s because you’re just too young and never had it before or because you’re an old grouchy guy who’s just unhappy about his life. You think all rich people are jerks, who stole their billions? Probably you’re just an unsuccessful idiot. Or wait, maybe you have stolen your billion already and you just think everybody who’s rich is like you.

Now, I’m not saying you’re right or wrong. You being wrong doesn’t make the “background” argument any better. Though, when people use it, chances are that your point is just not good for everyone and you’re being a bit preachy. Personally, I find this sort of discussions exhausting and that is why the “background” argument is almost always a good sign for me that I should switch the subject.
